India's Territorial Army launched Terrier Cyber Quest 2026 (TCQ 3.0) on August 21, 2026, the third edition of its national cyber hackathon series, run in partnership with the cyber-focused non-profit CyberPeace. The event is aimed at pulling in technical talent from academia, industry, research institutions, government bodies and the armed forces to work on defence, cybersecurity and information-domain problems — with a specific push this year toward artificial intelligence.
Unlike a typical corporate hackathon, TCQ is explicitly framed around national-security use cases: the organisers want participants building indigenous solutions relevant to India's cyber and information defence, rather than generic consumer or enterprise tools.
Two Competition Tracks, One Clear Theme
The hackathon runs two headline tracks. The Bug Hunting track starts with an online capture-the-flag (CTF) qualifying round before funnelling finalists into a 36-hour live sandbox finale, where they have to identify and document vulnerabilities in a simulated critical-infrastructure environment — the kind of live-fire exercise meant to mimic how real attackers would probe systems like power grids or communication networks.
The second track, AI Kavach ("AI Shield"), is built specifically around machine learning and AI applications for cyber defence: automated threat detection, predictive threat intelligence, and anomaly detection systems that can flag unusual network behaviour before it turns into a breach. Organisers pitched it as a way to source homegrown AI-driven defensive tools rather than relying on imported cybersecurity software for sensitive government and defence networks. The competition is open to students, startups, independent security researchers and digital-content creators, reflecting an attempt to widen the talent pool beyond traditional defence contractors.
Timeline to the Grand Finale
Registrations for TCQ 3.0 actually opened back on July 30, 2026, with the final entry deadline extended to August 31, 2026 to accommodate wider participation. From there, an online screening and shortlisting phase runs from September 1 to September 10, 2026, narrowing the field down to finalists.
Those finalists will compete in person in New Delhi during a Grand Finale running from October 6 to October 8, 2026, with a concluding ceremony scheduled for October 9. The multi-month structure — open registration, online qualifiers, then an in-person finale — mirrors how India's other major government-backed hackathons, like the Smart India Hackathon, have scaled participation while still allowing a rigorous final filter.
Why the Territorial Army Is Doing This
The Territorial Army, a volunteer reserve force distinct from the regular Indian Army, has increasingly used the Terrier Cyber Quest series as a recruiting and awareness tool for cyber talent — treating hackathons as a lower-friction way to identify skilled individuals who might not otherwise enter through conventional defence-forces pipelines. Framing this year's edition explicitly around AI reflects a broader pattern across India's defence establishment: DRDO, the Army's Corps of Signals and various service-specific labs have all ramped up AI-linked cybersecurity initiatives over the past two years as threats to critical infrastructure and defence networks have grown more automated and harder to detect using legacy, signature-based tools.
For India's cybersecurity startup ecosystem, competitions like TCQ also function as an informal pipeline: past editions have surfaced tools and teams that went on to work with government cybersecurity bodies, giving early-stage security researchers a visible route into national-security-relevant work without needing an existing contract or clearance.
