IIT Bombay's InspeCity Raises ₹100 Crore to Scale In-Space Satellite Servicing

IIT Bombay-incubated satellite-servicing startup InspeCity has raised ₹100 crore to fund flight qualification and four in-orbit missions over the next 12 to 18 months.

The Round

InspeCity, a Mumbai-based startup building technology to service, refuel and extend the life of satellites already in orbit, has raised ₹100 crore (roughly $10.5 million) in a pre-Series A round. The round was co-led by early-stage venture firm Speciale Invest and investor Ashish Kacholia, with participation from Antler Elevate, Antler India, angel investor Manish Gandhi, and Shastra VC.

The company plans to use the funding for flight qualification of its hardware and to fund four in-orbit missions over the next 12 to 18 months — a sharp acceleration from ground-based testing to actual spaceflight for a company that is still only four years old.

From IIT Bombay Lab to Orbit

InspeCity was founded in 2022 by Arindrajit Chowdhury, a professor at IIT Bombay, making it one of a growing number of Indian spacetech startups to emerge directly from a faculty lab rather than a founder's prior industry stint. The company works in what the space industry calls ISAM — in-space servicing, assembly and manufacturing — building the propulsion, robotics, sensing and autonomous-docking technology needed for one spacecraft to approach, inspect, and physically interact with another already in orbit.

That is a fundamentally different engineering problem from building and launching a satellite. It requires precision proximity operations, robotic manipulation in microgravity, and autonomous rendezvous and docking systems that can safely approach a target spacecraft that was never designed to be serviced. InspeCity's technology stack includes sensing and inspection systems the company calls CHAKSU and autonomous docking and refuelling capability under the name SPARSH, built toward a broader in-space servicing architecture aimed at extending satellite lifespans and, over time, addressing the growing problem of orbital debris.

Why Investors Are Betting on This Now

InspeCity's pre-Series A follows a $5.6 million (roughly ₹46–48 crore) seed round the company closed in May 2025, also led by Ashish Kacholia alongside Speciale Invest, Shastra VC, Antler India, DeVC, MGF-Kavachh and Anicut Capital. The jump from a seed round centered on early hardware development to a pre-Series A explicitly earmarked for flight qualification and four actual in-orbit missions marks a company moving from proving its technology on the ground to proving it works in space — historically the point at which spacetech startups either validate their core thesis or discover problems no ground test could have caught.

The timing lines up with a broader shift in how satellite operators think about their assets. As more satellites — commercial, government and defence — go into orbit, the economics of servicing and extending an existing satellite's life increasingly compete with the economics of simply launching a replacement, particularly for expensive, purpose-built spacecraft. Orbital debris mitigation is also becoming a harder regulatory and reputational requirement for satellite operators worldwide, giving deorbiting and life-extension services commercial relevance beyond servicing contracts alone.

India's Position in a Nascent Market

In-space servicing remains a young field globally — only a handful of companies worldwide, mostly in the US and Europe, have attempted actual in-orbit servicing or docking demonstrations, and few have done so commercially at scale. InspeCity's roadmap points toward a demonstration mission around 2027, which would put it among a small number of companies anywhere attempting to prove ISAM capability in orbit, and the first Indian company to seriously pursue the category.

Whether InspeCity gets there on schedule will depend on execution the funding round itself cannot guarantee — flight qualification, launch access, and successful proximity operations in orbit are each nontrivial engineering hurdles. But the round signals that Indian investors are now willing to fund spacetech ventures further upstream of revenue than the launch-vehicle and satellite-manufacturing plays that have dominated India's private space sector to date.

What Comes Next

If InspeCity holds its 12-to-18-month timeline for flight qualification, the first real test of the round's thesis will come with its first in-orbit mission — the point at which ground-validated hardware either performs as modelled in the vacuum and thermal extremes of actual orbit, or reveals the gap between simulation and space that has humbled far larger and better-funded in-space servicing efforts elsewhere in the world.
