Deepinder Goyal Unveils Redesigned Temple Brain-Monitoring Wearable, Now Half the Size

Deepinder Goyal, the founder of Zomato (now Eternal), unveiled a substantially redesigned version of Temple — his brain- and health-monitoring wearable — on his official X account on August 21, 2026. The new version is less than half the physical volume of the prototype Goyal showed earlier in the year, which he described as both the smallest wearable currently on the market by volume and the most powerful version of the device built to date. A limited launch edition is expected to open for pre-orders soon, with deliveries planned before the end of 2026 at a price point of roughly ₹80,000.
What Temple Actually Measures
Temple is a small, pebble-shaped device that attaches with adhesive tape to the side of the forehead, positioned to monitor cerebral blood flow using optical sensing methods, alongside a biomarker Goyal has referred to as "Entropy" — intended to track metabolic demand and other brain-related signals in real time. The stated goal is to surface information about fatigue, cognitive recovery, concentration and sleep quality by analysing patterns in brain blood flow and oxygenation, rather than relying on the heart rate, motion and skin-temperature sensors that dominate mainstream fitness wearables.
This puts Temple in a different category from most consumer wearables on the market. Where a smartwatch infers stress or recovery indirectly from heart-rate variability, Temple is attempting to measure signals closer to the brain itself — a harder engineering problem, given the need for stable optical contact through hair-free skin and enough signal processing to distinguish genuine physiological signal from motion artefacts, but one that could in principle provide more direct insight into cognitive state if the underlying science and calibration hold up at consumer scale.
From Zomato to Brain Hardware
Temple is a notable pivot for Goyal, who built Zomato — now Eternal, following its 2025 rebrand alongside its quick-commerce and events businesses — into one of India's largest consumer internet companies before turning to hardware. He first teased Temple publicly in December 2025, and the project raised its first $54 million funding round in February 2026 through friends-and-family investors, valuing the company at approximately $190 million at the time; more recent reporting suggests the company was seeking financing at a valuation closer to $500 million by August 2026, reflecting rapid investor interest in the intervening months even though the product itself has not yet had a full commercial launch.
Real-World Testing
Ahead of the public redesign reveal, the company shipped an initial cohort of roughly 100 units to a mixed group of testers — including elite athletes such as badminton player PV Sindhu, along with medical doctors and executives — for real-world stress testing outside a lab environment. That kind of early, high-performance-user testing is a common playbook for wearables aiming to establish credibility before a mass-market launch, giving the company usage data across genuinely demanding physical and cognitive conditions rather than relying solely on internal validation.
Why This Matters for India's Neurotech Ecosystem
India's neurotechnology research to date has mostly been concentrated in academic labs — IIT Delhi's work on hybrid EEG/fNIRS wearable brain-computer interfaces, IIT Kharagpur's work on motor-imagery decoding and assistive communication, and IIT Madras's brainstem atlas work among them — with commercial deployment remaining rare outside a handful of narrowly targeted assistive-communication or rehabilitation devices. Temple, by contrast, is a consumer-hardware bet from one of India's most prominent tech founders, backed by meaningful venture capital and explicitly targeting mainstream consumer adoption rather than a clinical or defence application. If it reaches its planned 2026 launch and finds real market traction, it would be among the first Indian-founded consumer neurotech products to do so — a different pathway into the sector than the government- and defence-oriented brain-computer interface work that has otherwise dominated India's neurotech conversation this year.
