AMD Partners With Delhi University to Train 10,000 Students in AI and ROCm
AMD has signed an MoU with the University of Delhi to train about 10,000 students on its open-source ROCm AI platform over the next year, extending its push to build developer loyalty in India.

10,000 students, one MoU
AMD and the University of Delhi signed a Memorandum of Understanding on September 3, 2026, committing to train roughly 10,000 students in AI and semiconductor-adjacent skills over the coming year. It's a modest-sounding number next to India's national AI-talent ambitions, but it's a concrete one, backed by a specific set of tools rather than a general pledge to "collaborate on AI" that never translates into anything students can actually use.
What AMD is actually handing over
Under the agreement, AMD is bringing its AI Engage Developer Program to Delhi University, giving students and faculty hands-on access to the company's open-source ROCm AI software platform — the software stack AMD positions as its answer to Nvidia's CUDA ecosystem — along with a structured AI learning curriculum, technical workshops, and developer GPU cloud credits for running real workloads rather than only studying AI concepts theoretically in a classroom. Jaya Jagadish, Country Head and SVP Engineering at AMD India, framed the intent behind the tools rather than just the headline student count: "India has the talent and the ambition to lead the next wave of AI innovation. The opportunity now is to give students early access to the platforms and tools that power real-world AI development."
Why a chipmaker wants university partnerships
For AMD, university skilling deals like this one serve a dual purpose that goes beyond corporate goodwill or a press-release photo opportunity. Training a cohort of Indian developers on ROCm specifically builds familiarity with AMD's own software ecosystem at a formative stage in those students' careers, potentially steering future engineering talent — and future enterprise AI deployments — away from the CUDA-centric default that Nvidia's years of developer-ecosystem investment has built into how most computer-science graduates are taught to work with GPUs. It's the same underlying logic that has driven Nvidia, Intel and other chipmakers to run their own campus and developer programs in India for years; AMD's Delhi University tie-up is a variant of a well-worn play, applied to one of India's largest and most prominent public universities, with a student body that dwarfs what most private engineering colleges could offer a partner at this scale.
Part of a broader skilling push
The deal lands amid a steady drumbeat of India-focused AI education announcements from global tech companies through 2026 — AMD had already announced 100,000 hours of free developer-cloud access for Indian researchers and startups earlier in the year — as firms compete to be the platform Indian developers default to as the country's AI talent pool continues to scale. Delhi University's move to sign on gives it a specific, named industry partner and a concrete curriculum, at a moment when Indian universities are under growing pressure to demonstrate that their computer-science and engineering graduates arrive job-ready for AI-heavy roles, rather than needing extensive employer-funded retraining after hiring, a gap that Indian industry has complained about publicly for several years running.
Whether training 10,000 students within a year meaningfully changes Delhi University's placement outcomes — or whether this remains one skilling MoU among many announced this year, filed away and only loosely tracked — will depend on how many of those students go on to actually build and deploy AI applications rather than simply completing a workshop and a certificate. That distinction, more than the headline number itself, is what will determine whether AMD's bet on Delhi University pays off in the way Jagadish's statement implies.
