A first outside cheque, eight years in
Kepler Aerospace has waited a long time for outside money. The Bengaluru-based space-infrastructure company was founded in 2018 by Navneet Singh and Kiran V. Sharma, who met while working at ISRO, and until this week it had grown entirely on contract revenue and government grants. On September 1, the company announced its first external funding round: an $8 million seed raise led by Blue Ashva Capital, with Finvolve and India Accelerator co-leading alongside a group of other investors.
The money arrives with a specific mandate attached. Kepler has spent the past two years quietly building the pieces of a full space-infrastructure stack — satellite avionics, a ground-station network, and mission-operations software — and the new capital is earmarked to turn two Ministry of Defence contracts into hardware in orbit.
Two iDEX contracts, one constellation
Kepler holds two prime contracts awarded through iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence), the Ministry of Defence's startup-facing procurement arm, developed under the guidance of the Defence Space Agency and iDEX-DIO. Together the contracts carry roughly $4 million in grant funding and task Kepler with building what the company and Indian defence-watchers have described as the country's first swarming intelligence-surveillance-reconnaissance (ISR) satellite constellation.
The pitch is autonomy. Rather than each satellite waiting for instructions relayed from a ground station, Kepler's constellation is designed so its six satellites can communicate with each other, assign tasks among themselves, and act in coordination while in orbit. The satellites will carry a mix of optical, thermal and RF payloads for geospatial intelligence collection, and one of the two iDEX contracts — reported at roughly ₹38 crore — specifically funds the swarming Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS) modules that let the satellites maintain formation and re-task themselves without ground intervention.
Kepler says the aim is to collapse the time it takes to turn space-based data into usable intelligence from months to minutes, a gap that has historically been one of the weaker links in India's space-based surveillance chain.
The infrastructure play behind the satellites
What differentiates Kepler from a typical satellite-builder is that it isn't only building satellites. The company describes itself as assembling an integrated space-infrastructure stack: satellite systems and avionics (onboard computers, power systems, RF payloads, communication and navigation modules), a ground-station network the company says now exceeds 70 stations, and mission-operations services offered on a pay-for-use basis. Kepler's avionics and subsystems have already flown on missions involving ISRO and national defence agencies, giving the eight-year-old company a flight-heritage argument that is unusual among Indian space startups still pre-first-launch.
That "picks-and-shovels" positioning — selling satellite communication, tracking, telemetry, command and mission-operations capability as a service to other space missions, in addition to building its own ISR constellation — is part of what the new investors are underwriting. The seed round is meant to fund the six-satellite launch under the iDEX contracts while also scaling Kepler's avionics-as-a-service and mission-operations lines, which generate revenue independent of any single satellite programme.
Where it sits in India's crowded ISR push
Kepler's raise lands at a moment when India's defence establishment has been pushing hard to indigenise space-based surveillance, from ISRO's own satellite build-out to a wave of IN-SPACe-backed private Earth-observation constellations. What sets Kepler's approach apart is the swarming architecture and the explicit defence-space customer: the constellation is being developed for India's defence-space ecosystem rather than as a commercial Earth-observation play sold primarily to civilian or export customers.
Founders Singh and Sharma have both previously said the company's roots at ISRO shaped its approach to reliability and mission assurance — a pitch that appears to have resonated with a seed syndicate heavier on strategic and deep-tech-focused investors than on generalist consumer-tech funds. Blue Ashva Capital has increasingly backed hard-tech and defence-adjacent Indian startups, and its decision to lead Kepler's first-ever external round signals continued investor appetite for space-defence infrastructure plays even as broader startup funding has cooled in parts of the Indian market.
For Kepler, the immediate milestone to watch is the constellation's launch, which the company has previously targeted for around December 2027. Between now and then, the $8 million round gives it runway to convert two years of iDEX-funded engineering work into satellites actually reaching orbit — the point at which "swarming ISR" stops being a pitch-deck term and starts being an operational capability the Indian armed forces can call on.
The iDEX-to-equity pipeline
Kepler's path — grant-funded prototype work through iDEX, followed by a first institutional round once the engineering has a defence customer attached — has become a recognisable template in Indian deep tech over the past two years, and one the government has leaned into deliberately. iDEX and its parent Defence Innovation Organisation exist precisely to de-risk early hardware work that commercial VCs are reluctant to fund pre-revenue, then let private capital step in once a startup has a signed contract rather than just a lab demo. Kepler's seed round is a fairly clean example of that handoff working as designed: eight years of engineering and government-funded contract work converted, in a single round, into outside equity from investors betting on the constellation actually flying rather than on the underlying technology risk alone.
It also illustrates a shift in what "seed stage" means for Indian space and defence startups. Unlike a typical eight-month-old software seed round, Kepler's raise sits on top of flight-proven subsystems, an operating ground-station network, and two live government contracts — closer in risk profile to a growth round dressed in seed-round clothing. That maturity is likely one reason Blue Ashva Capital was comfortable leading a company's very first external check with a full syndicate rather than a smaller, exploratory cheque.
