A New Kind of Unit for a New Kind of War

The Indian Army has formally raised its first dedicated drone-operating battalion, named "Baaz" (Hawk), headquartered in Jalandhar, Punjab, and placed under the Army's 11 Corps along the western front with Pakistan. The move, reported in the third week of August 2026, is one of the more concrete organisational outcomes of the military restructuring that followed Operation Sindoor, India's cross-border strike campaign, as the Army moves to institutionalise drone warfare rather than treat it as an add-on to existing formations.

Rather than distributing uninhabited aerial vehicles (UAVs) piecemeal across infantry and artillery units, the Baaz Battalion is designed to function as a centralised nerve centre for operational-level intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR). It is expected to run under the Army Aviation Corps, coordinating a mixed fleet of drones to handle deep-penetration reconnaissance, target designation, and data fusion across the battlespace.

Closing the "Sensor-to-Shooter" Gap

The stated purpose behind the Baaz concept is to shorten what military planners call the "sensor-to-shooter" cycle — the time between spotting a target and being able to strike it. In a traditional setup, a surveillance drone from one unit spots a target, and that information has to be relayed, verified and handed off to an artillery or strike unit elsewhere, introducing delay at every step. A centralised drone battalion aims to fuse sensing and targeting functions in one place, cutting that chain down and giving field commanders a more continuous, real-time picture of the battlefield.

This mirrors lessons India has drawn from recent conflicts elsewhere — including Nagorno-Karabakh and Ukraine — where cheap, persistent drone surveillance combined with fast targeting loops has repeatedly outmatched slower, more traditional command structures.

What Baaz Will Fly

Confirmed and planned platforms for the Baaz Battalion span the full altitude spectrum. At the shorter end are Israeli-origin Searcher-class UAVs, already in Indian service for tactical reconnaissance. In the medium-altitude, long-endurance (MALE) category, the unit is expected to draw on Israeli Heron and Hermes-family drones.

At the high end sits the MQ-9B SkyGuardian, the high-altitude, long-endurance (HALE) platform India is acquiring from US manufacturer General Atomics under a government-to-government deal for 31 MQ-9B aircraft — 15 SeaGuardian variants for the Navy and 16 SkyGuardians split between the Army and Air Force. The Army's share is eight SkyGuardians, aircraft capable of flying for more than 40 hours at altitudes above 40,000 feet while carrying a substantial sensor and weapons payload. First deliveries under that contract are expected only by early 2029, meaning the Baaz Battalion will initially operate with its shorter-range Israeli platforms while the higher-end capability is built out over the rest of the decade.

Part of a Wider Pattern

The Baaz Battalion is described as the first of what are expected to be several such units — informally called "Baaz battalions" — to be raised progressively along India's western and northern fronts, giving multiple corps their own dedicated drone-ISR formations rather than relying on ad hoc task-organised detachments. Coming so soon after Operation Sindoor, the move is widely read as a direct institutional response to that operation's lessons about the value of persistent, centrally coordinated drone surveillance in a fast-moving border conflict.

For India's broader defence-tech ecosystem, a standing military customer built specifically around fleets of UAVs — spanning tactical, medium-altitude and high-altitude platforms — also creates a more predictable demand signal for the country's fast-growing base of indigenous drone and counter-drone manufacturers, even as the Army's own inventory leans heavily on imported Israeli and American systems for now.
