IN-SPACe Crosses 130 Authorisations as India's Private Space Sector Tops 450 Startups
India's space regulator IN-SPACe has issued more than 130 authorisations and the private space sector has crossed 450 startups, with private investment topping $618.5 million since the 2020 reforms, official figures show.

A regulator's scorecard
Six years after India threw open its space sector to private players, the numbers are beginning to add up. India's space regulator, the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), has now issued more than 130 authorisations for private space activities, and the country's private space ecosystem has grown past 450 startups, according to government figures reported in the week of 22–24 July 2026. Private investment into the sector has crossed $618.5 million since the 2020 reforms.
The milestones land just days after Skyroot Aerospace's Vikram-1 became the first privately built Indian rocket to reach orbit, on 18 July 2026 — a symbolic bookend to a period in which policy reform, regulatory plumbing and private capital have started to reinforce one another.
From monopoly to marketplace
Until 2020, space in India was effectively the preserve of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The reforms that year created IN-SPACe as a single-window body to authorise and supervise non-governmental space activities, and opened access to ISRO's facilities, data and technical expertise for private firms.
IN-SPACe's role is part regulator, part enabler: it grants formal authorisation for activities ranging from building and operating satellites to launching rockets, and it brokers access to government infrastructure and technology transfer. The 130-plus authorisations issued so far span the value chain — launch vehicles, satellite manufacturing, ground systems, Earth-observation services and downstream applications — and reflect a pipeline that has broadened well beyond a handful of marquee names.
The money is starting to move
The $618.5 million of private investment since 2020 is modest by the standards of the global space economy, but the trajectory matters more than the absolute figure. A large share of recent capital has flowed to a cluster of well-funded leaders — Skyroot Aerospace, which has raised around $150 million; Earth-observation firm Pixxel; and launch-vehicle developer Agnikul Cosmos among them — while a long tail of younger startups works on propulsion, space-situational awareness, satellite components and analytics.
Government data also points to a step-up in investment during 2026 specifically, as private launches, satellite constellations and defence-linked space projects gather pace. The direction of travel is clear: India is trying to convert its reputation for low-cost, reliable space engineering into a commercial industry that captures a bigger slice of the global market.
What is being built
The breadth of activity behind the authorisation count is striking. Skyroot's orbital success gives India a private launch capability alongside ISRO. A Pixxel-led consortium has been contracted to build a national Earth-observation constellation. Companies such as Digantara are commercialising space-situational awareness — effectively traffic-tracking for an increasingly crowded orbit — while others build satellite buses, optical and radar payloads, and the data pipelines that turn raw imagery into decisions for agriculture, insurance, defence and disaster management.
IN-SPACe has also been enabling technology transfer from ISRO to industry, allowing private firms to manufacture proven systems such as the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle rather than reinventing them. That hand-off of hard-won government know-how is one of the less visible but more consequential parts of the reform.
Why it matters
For India, a thriving private space sector is about more than commercial upside. Earth-observation and communications capacity underpin everything from monsoon forecasting and crop monitoring to border surveillance and disaster response — areas where sovereign, domestically controlled infrastructure has strategic value. Building that capacity through private industry lets ISRO concentrate scarce resources on flagship missions such as Gaganyaan, the country's human-spaceflight programme, and on deep-space science.
A larger private base also deepens the talent pool, supply chain and manufacturing muscle the whole ecosystem draws on, and creates the kind of competitive pressure that tends to drive costs down and cadence up.
The road ahead
The headline numbers still need to mature into revenue and repeat launches. Many of the 450-plus startups are early-stage and unproven; authorisations are permissions, not deliveries; and India's share of global space spending remains small. Sustained progress will depend on a steady flow of later-stage capital, more launch cadence, clear rules on spectrum and orbital slots, and demand — much of it from the government itself — to anchor young companies through their first commercial years.
But the picture in mid-2026 is of a sector that has moved from policy promise to measurable activity. With a private orbital launch on the board, a national EO constellation in the works and a regulator now waving through authorisations by the dozen, India's space economy is starting to look less like an experiment and more like an industry.
