The Army Comes to Chennai

Major General Gopal Kapoor of the Indian Army's Design Bureau visited Garuda Aerospace's drone manufacturing facility in Chennai on September 11, 2026, to assess the company's indigenous drone technology and production capabilities. The Army Design Bureau, which coordinates between the Army and domestic industry on equipment development, uses visits like this to evaluate which manufacturers can be brought closer into the Army's indigenisation and procurement pipeline.

Garuda Aerospace, a Chennai-headquartered drone maker backed by former Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni, used the visit to showcase its full manufacturing stack: a 50,000 sq ft facility covering design, prototyping, manufacturing, testing and deployment, with in-house injection moulding, industrial-grade 3D printing, and battery assembly and testing infrastructure.

The Case Garuda Made

Beyond the physical facility, Garuda's pitch to the Army Design Bureau centred on research depth: the company says its capabilities are backed by more than 50 PhD researchers working across PCB manufacturing, RF antennae, communication systems and Ground Control Stations — the electronics and software layers that determine whether a drone can operate reliably in contested or GPS-denied environments, a growing requirement for defence-grade unmanned systems.

The visit's stated focus was on Garuda's indigenous and localisation capabilities, along with its current and upcoming projects supporting India's defence and drone ecosystem. Garuda presented its defence programmes, manufacturing capacity, R&D initiatives and industry partnerships to Major General Kapoor's team, alongside its drone pilot training ecosystem — built through its network of DGCA-approved Remote Pilot Training Organisations (RPTOs). The company also discussed a proposal it has put to the Chief of Defence Staff to train 80,000 Agniveers across the Army, Navy and Air Force in drone operations, a scale that would make Garuda one of the largest single providers of military drone-pilot training in the country if approved.

Reading the Timing

The visit comes roughly three months after Garuda's broader profile rose amid a wave of attention on India's defence-drone sector, alongside companies like Raphe mPhibr and ideaForge, several of which have been reported to be eyeing public listings as the sector matures from prototype-stage startups into scaled manufacturers with defence contracts. It also lands squarely inside a week when the Indian Air Force ran its own three-day Dronathon-2026 exercise at Pokhran, showcasing indigenous drone and counter-drone systems — part of a broader tri-services push this year to pull more domestic manufacturers into live evaluation and procurement pipelines rather than leaving indigenisation as a paper commitment.

For Garuda specifically, an Army Design Bureau facility visit is not itself a contract or an order — it's an evaluation step. But it is a meaningfully different kind of engagement than the company's earlier public narrative, which leaned heavily on its civilian and agricultural drone business (including a DGCA-inaugurated drone battery manufacturing facility and an agri-drone indigenisation facility, both also in Chennai). The Army's interest specifically in Garuda's defence programmes and RF/communications R&D suggests the company is trying to establish itself as a serious defence-sector manufacturer, not just a civilian drone company that also sells to the military.

What an Army Design Bureau Visit Actually Signals

The Army Design Bureau's role is to serve as a bridge between the Army's operational requirements and domestic industry's manufacturing capacity — it does not itself place procurement orders, but its assessments feed into how the Army prioritises which manufacturers to bring into trials, general staff qualitative requirement (GSQR) discussions, and eventually formal tenders. A facility visit at Major General rank is a meaningful escalation from lower-level industry outreach, since it typically means the Army sees enough potential in a company's indigenous capability to warrant senior attention, even though it commits the Army to nothing contractually.

For a company like Garuda, which has built much of its scale and revenue on civilian applications — agricultural spraying drones, drone pilot training, and battery manufacturing — a visit focused specifically on defence programmes and RF/communications R&D suggests the company is being evaluated on a different set of criteria than its existing civilian business. Secure communications, electronic-warfare resilience, and autonomous navigation in GPS-denied environments are capabilities that civilian agricultural drones simply don't need, and demonstrating them credibly to a defence audience requires a different kind of engineering investment than scaling crop-spraying operations.

Why It Matters for India's Drone Ecosystem

India's push to indigenise unmanned systems has accelerated sharply over the past two years, driven by border tensions, the visible battlefield impact of drones in conflicts elsewhere, and government schemes designed to reduce reliance on imported UAS components and complete platforms. That push has created a genuine opening for Indian manufacturers that can demonstrate both manufacturing scale and the harder-to-fake technical depth — RF systems, secure communications, autonomous navigation — that separates a defence-grade drone from a commercial one adapted for military use.

Garuda's showcase to the Army Design Bureau is one data point in that larger sorting process: which of India's dozens of drone startups and manufacturers will be treated by the armed forces as genuine defence suppliers, versus which will remain primarily civilian or agricultural players. The next signal to watch will be whether this visit translates into a formal evaluation, trial, or procurement conversation, rather than remaining a one-off facility tour.
