DRDO Tests Its Military Combat Parachute System at 22,000 Feet in Ladakh

A High-Altitude Proving Ground
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully trialled its indigenously developed Military Combat Parachute System (MCPS) at Nyoma, in south-eastern Ladakh, one of the highest-altitude drop zones anywhere near an active line of control. The test, conducted on August 26, 2026, took place in temperatures as low as minus 15°C, at a site close to the Line of Control.
Who Jumped, and How High
Three ADRDE test jumpers carried out the trial: Wing Commander Rahul Jha, ADRDE's Chief Test Jumper, along with Master Warrant Officers RJ Singh and Vivek Tiwari. The team exited their aircraft at 22,000 feet above mean sea level, deployed the MCPS canopy at 20,000 feet, and landed safely at 13,700 feet — a controlled descent through nearly a mile and a half of altitude in conditions that test both the parachute system and the physiology of the jumpers wearing it.
What Makes MCPS Different
MCPS was designed and developed jointly by DRDO's Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE) in Agra and the Defence Bioengineering and Electromedical Laboratory in Bengaluru — a pairing that reflects what high-altitude combat parachuting actually requires: not just a canopy that opens reliably in thin, cold air, but life-support systems that keep a jumper conscious and functional on the way down.
The Ladakh trial exercised the full MCPS package rather than the canopy alone, including an indigenous para-computer that manages automatic deployment sequencing, an oxygen system for the extended high-altitude descent, and specialized jumpsuits rated for sub-zero conditions. DRDO has positioned MCPS as intended for the tactical insertion of special forces personnel carrying combat loads into designated operational areas — the kind of high-altitude, cold-weather infiltration missions that Ladakh's terrain has made a permanent feature of India's northern defence planning.
Why Ladakh, Specifically
Nyoma sits in a stretch of Ladakh that has taken on growing military significance in recent years, both for its proximity to the Line of Actual Control and for infrastructure like the Nyoma airfield that the Indian Air Force has been developing nearby. Testing a combat parachute system at an operationally relevant altitude and location, rather than in a controlled range elsewhere in the country, is itself a signal: DRDO and the Army are validating MCPS in conditions close to where special forces might actually need it, not just under laboratory-representative parameters.
The Bigger Picture
MCPS joins a small family of Indian high-altitude parachute programs that have moved from lab development to field trials over the past several years, part of a broader push to reduce the Indian Armed Forces' reliance on imported parachute and personal-equipment systems for high-altitude special operations. DRDO has not yet indicated a timeline for MCPS induction into operational service, and a successful high-altitude trial — while a significant milestone — typically precedes further rounds of user trials with the Army's own Special Forces and Parachute Regiment before a system is formally inducted.
