Bengaluru's Airbound Raises $37 Million to Fly Rocket-Like Drones Past Trucking's Cost Floor
Bengaluru-based Airbound has raised a $37 million Series A led by Greenoaks and signed a deal with Andhra Pradesh to run up to 10,000 autonomous cargo-drone flights a day across three cities.

Bengaluru's Airbound wants to out-cheap the truck
Airbound, a Bengaluru-based startup building autonomous cargo aircraft, closed a $37 million Series A on August 25, 2026, led by Greenoaks, with DoorDash, Lachy Groom, Lightspeed and Humba Ventures also participating. The round takes the company's total funding to roughly $50 million, less than a year after an $8.65 million seed round, and lands alongside a commercial deployment agreement with the government of Andhra Pradesh to build a drone-delivery network linking Amaravati, Vijayawada and Guntur.
A rocket that turns into a plane
Airbound's pitch rests on an unusual airframe: a "blended wing body tailsitter" that launches vertically, like a rocket, then tips over mid-air to cruise horizontally on fixed wings — eliminating the need for a runway or a launchpad while still getting the fuel-efficiency benefits of fixed-wing flight over a traditional quadcopter drone. Founder and CEO Naman Pushp has framed the company's bet as one about physics rather than software: "Better physics leads to better economics, which unlocks the potential to move people and goods for a fraction of a cent," he said of the design philosophy.
The current production aircraft, called TRT, weighs about 3.3 pounds and carries roughly 2.2 pounds of payload. A next-generation version under development is expected to roughly double both figures, weighing around 6.6 pounds while carrying up to 11 pounds. According to the company, its fleet has logged more than 13,000 autonomous missions to date without a failure — a track record it is now betting on to win over a state government rather than only individual retail and logistics customers.
The Andhra Pradesh deal
Under the new agreement, Airbound will build a delivery network connecting three Andhra Pradesh cities — the state capital region of Amaravati, along with Vijayawada and Guntur — with a stated ambition to scale to 10,000 flights a day. The company frames the target use cases as retail, e-commerce and healthcare deliveries, the same categories that have driven drone-delivery pilots elsewhere in India and globally, from time-sensitive pharmacy orders to last-mile e-commerce parcels in traffic-choked cities.
Ten thousand daily flights would be a meaningfully larger commercial footprint than most Indian drone-delivery operators have reached to date, most of which remain in pilot phases with a handful of routes. Whether Airbound hits that number will depend on regulatory clearances from India's drone rules — covering beyond-visual-line-of-sight operations, airspace corridors and payload categories — that have historically been the pacing factor for delivery-drone scale-ups in India, more than the hardware itself.
Betting against the truck, not just the drone
Airbound's framing — competing on unit economics with trucking, not just with other drone startups — points to where the company thinks its real addressable market sits: short-to-medium-haul logistics currently served by road vehicles, where fuel, driver costs and traffic congestion set a cost floor that a sufficiently cheap autonomous aircraft could undercut. That is a more ambitious claim than most delivery-drone startups make, and one that will be tested at commercial scale for the first time through the Andhra Pradesh rollout rather than in a lab or a limited pilot.
The Series A investor list is notable for including DoorDash, a food-delivery logistics operator with an obvious strategic interest in cheaper last-mile delivery infrastructure, alongside more traditional venture investors in Greenoaks, Lightspeed and Humba Ventures. That mix suggests Airbound is positioning itself as infrastructure that logistics platforms could eventually plug into, rather than purely a consumer-facing delivery brand of its own.
For India's broader physical-AI and robotics startup ecosystem — which has drawn growing venture interest through 2026 across warehouse automation, industrial inspection and autonomous aircraft — Airbound's raise is among the largest single rounds so far this year in the sector, and one of the first to pair serious venture capital with an explicit government commercial-deployment agreement rather than a pilot MoU.
