Odisha-based underwater robotics start-up Coratia Technologies has raised ₹18 crore in a bridge round led by MGF Kavachh. The money is earmarked for one job above all others: delivering the ₹66 crore contract the company won from the Indian Navy for its indigenous underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV), Jalasimha.

The round

According to reports in Entrackr and other start-up trade outlets this week, the company will use the capital to execute the Navy contract, accelerate research and development, improve its underwater robotics technology and scale up manufacturing and deployment.

The Navy contract behind it

The round only makes sense in light of the order book. Entrackr reports that the company will use the fresh capital to execute its ₹66 crore Indian Navy contract under iDEX. The announcement is about financing execution, rather than a new Navy order.

The company says Jalasimha has reached Technology Readiness Level 9 (TRL-9) — the top of the scale, meaning the system has been proven in its operational environment rather than only in trials.

For a young hardware company, a multi-crore defence order creates an awkward gap: the contract is valuable, but materials, testing, qualification and production have to be paid for long before the customer's milestones release cash. Bridge capital from a fund that understands defence procurement is a common way to close that gap.

Who is behind Coratia

Coratia was founded by Debendra Pradhan (co-founder and CEO) and Biswajit Swain. It is one of a small group of Indian companies building underwater robotic systems for defence and infrastructure work — inspection of ship hulls, ports, dams, pipelines and other submerged assets, as well as naval surveillance tasks.

Why underwater robotics matters for India

India's maritime security needs are growing faster than its supply of crewed platforms and divers. ROVs let navies inspect hulls and harbour infrastructure, search for objects on the seabed and support surveillance without putting divers at risk. Historically most such systems have been imported.

What to watch

The key milestones now are delivery and acceptance of the Jalasimha units under the Navy contract, and whether Coratia can convert its defence credentials into civil infrastructure work and follow-on orders. A full Series A, which the bridge round is designed to set up, would be the next signal of investor confidence.
