Bengaluru-based defence and dual-use technology startup Zoppler Systems has raised Rs 6.5 crore in a funding round led by Finvolve and India Accelerator. The young company is building indigenous radio-frequency (RF) sensing hardware paired with an AI-driven autonomy platform, targeting a capability gap that modern conflicts have thrown into sharp relief: knowing who is transmitting, from where, and what to do about it — in real time.

What Zoppler is building

The startup's core is a set of indigenous RF sensing products that detect, locate and classify radio-frequency activity across the electromagnetic spectrum. Sitting on top of that hardware is what Zoppler calls a vendor-agnostic, Edge AI-powered autonomy platform — software that turns raw signal detections into decisions at the sensor itself, without a round trip to a central server. Because it is designed to be vendor-agnostic, the platform is meant to work across sensors and systems already in the field rather than locking a customer into a single hardware stack. Zoppler frames the capability as spanning airborne, ground, naval and — in time — space domains.

Why RF sensing matters now

The ability to sense and make sense of the RF environment sits at the heart of electronic warfare, drone detection and battlefield situational awareness. Drones, jammers, radios and radars all announce themselves in the spectrum; the side that can passively map that activity, classify it and react fastest holds a decisive edge. Doing this at the edge — on the sensor, in real time, without human bottlenecks — is precisely where AI is reshaping defence electronics. For India, where reducing dependence on imported electronic-warfare and sensing systems is a stated national priority, an indigenous contender in this niche is strategically useful well out of proportion to the modest cheque size.

The dual-use angle

Zoppler, founded in November 2024 by Om Rana, Prakash Ramachandra and Shridhar YB, is explicit that its technology is dual-use. Beyond military applications, the same passive RF-sensing and edge-autonomy stack applies to protecting critical infrastructure — ports, airports, energy facilities, industrial sites and logistics networks — all of which face growing threats from unauthorised drones and rogue transmitters. That breadth gives an early-stage startup more than one route to revenue while defence procurement cycles, notoriously long, play out.

What the money is for

The company says it will use the fresh capital to accelerate product development, strengthen field validation of its indigenous technologies, expand its engineering team and scale deployments across defence and dual-use sectors. Field validation is the operative phrase: in defence sensing, credibility comes from demonstrated performance in realistic conditions, and a seed round that funds trials rather than just prototypes is the right early priority. The round adds to a steady drumbeat of small, technically ambitious Indian defence-tech startups drawing early institutional backing — a pattern that, cheque by cheque, is building out a domestic base in exactly the areas the armed forces most want to indigenise.
