Sarvam AI hires ex-Google Cloud India chief Sashikumar Sreedharan to sell sovereign AI to enterprises
Sarvam AI has appointed former Google Cloud India MD Sashikumar Sreedharan as President and Chief Business Officer, signalling a push from model-building to enterprise and government sales.

Sarvam AI, the Bengaluru company building some of India's most prominent home-grown foundation models, has made its first high-profile C-suite hire from Big Tech. Sashikumar Sreedharan, who until recently ran Google Cloud in India, has joined Sarvam as President and Chief Business Officer, according to reports published on 6-7 October 2026.
The appointment signals a clear shift in emphasis: after two years focused on building models, Sarvam is now gearing up to sell them — to large enterprises and to government.
Who is Sashikumar Sreedharan
Sreedharan has spent his career selling technology to India's largest organisations. He became Managing Director of Google Cloud India in July 2025, after serving as Chief Operating Officer for Google Cloud in Asia-Pacific. Before Google, he led Microsoft India's enterprise business as a managing director.
At Sarvam, he will lead enterprise growth, strategic partnerships, business expansion and large-scale AI adoption across companies and government departments.
Google has named Amit Kumar as interim head of Google Cloud India. Karan Bajwa, President of Google Cloud Asia Pacific, wrote on LinkedIn that he wanted to personally thank Sreedharan, "who is moving on from Google to an external opportunity."
Sarvam's journey so far
Sarvam has become the most closely watched company in India's push for "sovereign AI" — models built, trained and hosted in India, tuned for Indian languages and use cases:
- In February 2026, it launched Sarvam 30B and Sarvam 105B, mixture-of-experts models that it open-sourced under the Apache 2.0 licence in March.
- In June 2026, it announced a $234 million first close of a $300 million Series B at a $1.5 billion post-money valuation, with HCLTech as lead strategic investor alongside Bessemer and existing backers.
- In late September, it released Saaras V4 for speech recognition and Vision 2.1 for document understanding across India's 22 scheduled languages.
The company says its conversational platform handles more than 2 million interactions a day.
The sovereignty question
The hire comes as Sarvam broadens what it sells. A Forbes analysis published on 8 October notes that Sarvam's API now offers, in beta, third-party open-weight models — including Zhipu's GLM, DeepSeek and Google's Gemma — running on Sarvam's infrastructure alongside its own models. Forbes reports that one DeepSeek model is listed at a lower per-token price than Sarvam's flagship 105B model, and points out that Zhipu has been on the US Entity List since January 2025.
Forbes argues that this reflects a shift in what "sovereign AI" means in practice: from who built the model to where it runs and who controls the data. For enterprise and government buyers in regulated sectors, hosting inside India and complying with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act may matter more than a model's origin — though offering Chinese-origin models will invite scrutiny of its own. These details come from the Forbes analysis; Sarvam has not commented publicly on the strategy.
Why it matters
India's foundation-model companies face a hard commercial question. Training competitive models is extremely expensive, and global models from OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Meta and Chinese labs are improving quickly and getting cheaper. Indian players must win on languages, cost, data residency, customisation and trust — and must convert that into revenue.
Hiring a seasoned enterprise-cloud executive is a bet that the next phase is about distribution: sales teams, systems-integrator partnerships, government procurement and long enterprise contracts. Sreedharan's experience at Google Cloud and Microsoft is exactly that playbook.
For India's broader AI ambitions, including the IndiaAI Mission's support for domestic models, Sarvam's commercial success or struggle will be an important signal of whether sovereign AI can become a sustainable business rather than a policy aspiration.
