Bengaluru-based Remidio Innovative Solutions has been granted US Patent No. 12,611,103 for a wearable eye-imaging device — built as smart glasses or a VR-style headset rather than a desk-mounted instrument — that the company says can replace a slit lamp and an ophthalmoscope with a single piece of hardware worn on the face. The grant, announced on August 26, 2026, is a narrow technical milestone on paper, but it points at a much larger bet the 17-year-old company has been building toward for years: that the eye is the cheapest, fastest window medicine has into the rest of the body, and that reading it shouldn't require a clinic visit.

What the Patent Actually Covers

Conventional eye screening spreads across separate instruments and separate visits. A slit lamp examines the front of the eye. A fundus camera images the retina at the back. A diffused anterior segment scan checks for surface conditions. Each typically needs its own machine, its own positioning, and — for retinal imaging in particular — dilating drops that blur a patient's vision for hours afterward and rule out same-day driving.

Remidio's patented design folds more than five of these exams into a single wearable unit. The headset uses infrared illumination instead of the bright visible light conventional instruments rely on, which is what lets it image the retina without dilation in the first place — infrared passes through the undilated pupil in a way visible light can't without discomfort and glare. That single change removes the biggest friction point in retinal screening: the drops, the wait, and the blurred vision that keep routine eye exams from being routine for most people.

Why a Patent for a Headset Matters to "Oculomics"

The retina is one of the only places in the human body where blood vessels can be examined directly, non-invasively and without radiation. Over the past decade, a growing field of research — Oculomics — has built a case that those retinal blood vessels carry legible signals about conditions far beyond the eye: cardiovascular disease, diabetes, kidney disease, and early markers of neurodegenerative conditions among them. The idea has moved from research curiosity to something insurers and health systems are starting to take seriously, but it has been held back by exactly the bottleneck Remidio's patent targets — retinal imaging has stayed something done to you in a clinic, by a technician, with drops, rather than something a wearable device could do continuously or on demand.

"We keep asking the same question: what does it take to bring care closer to the patient, closer to the consumer, even into the home?" Remidio CEO Anand Sivaraman said of the patent grant. A wearable, no-dilation retinal imaging system is a direct answer to that question — it's the form factor that would need to exist before Oculomics could plausibly move from hospital-based screening programs to something closer to continuous, at-home monitoring.

A Company Already Screening at Scale

Remidio isn't a first-time entrant betting everything on a single patent. Founded in 2009, the company built its name on Fundus on Phone (FOP), a smartphone-based non-mydriatic retinal camera that let a health worker with minimal training capture clinical-grade retinal images in the field — no dedicated dark room, no dilation, no ophthalmologist required to operate it. Layered on top is Medios, Remidio's offline AI that reads those images for diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration in under ten seconds without needing an internet connection, a design choice aimed squarely at the primary-care and rural-screening settings where connectivity can't be assumed.

That combination — cheap hardware, offline AI, no dilation — has already been validated well beyond India. Medios has CE marking as a Class II medical device under the EU's Medical Device Regulation, approval from Singapore's Health Sciences Authority, and clearance from India's CDSCO. The company says its devices have helped screen more than 10 million patients globally, including through partnerships with eye-care networks such as Aravind Eye Care, where FOP-equipped health workers screen for diabetic retinopathy at primary vision centres that would otherwise have no retinal camera at all.

From Handheld to Wearable

The newly patented headset is a logical next step rather than a pivot: if a smartphone-mounted camera could take the retinal camera out of the ophthalmologist's office and into a rural vision centre, a wearable, dilation-free version could in principle take it further still — into a pharmacy, a workplace health check, or eventually a consumer device a person puts on themselves. Remidio hasn't announced a commercial timeline for a product built around the patent, and turning a granted patent into shipping hardware at the accuracy levels clinical screening demands is a multi-year undertaking even for a company with Remidio's track record. But the filing gives the company a defensible position in a specific, hard technical problem — dilation-free, wearable, multi-exam eye imaging — just as global interest in Oculomics as a low-cost early-warning system for chronic disease is starting to build.
