NTPC Charts a 149 GW, Storage-and-Hydrogen Future for FY26
NTPC has outlined a clean-energy build-out targeting 149 GW of capacity by 2032 — including ~60 GW of renewables, 38.9 GWh of battery storage, green hydrogen and a 30 GW nuclear programme by FY47 — backed by a ₹16.8 lakh crore capex plan.

India's largest power producer, NTPC Limited, has laid out an ambitious clean-energy expansion strategy alongside its FY2025-26 performance, sketching a build-out that leans heavily on renewables, battery storage, green hydrogen and nuclear. The roadmap was detailed in early August 2026.
The headline numbers
According to the disclosures, NTPC is targeting an installed capacity of about 149 GW by 2032, with roughly 60 GW of that coming from renewables — a dramatic tilt for a utility built on thermal generation. To support that shift, the company has outlined a capital-expenditure programme of the order of ₹16.8 lakh crore across FY26 to FY37, one of the largest capex plans announced by any Indian company.
The scale reflects a simple reality: decarbonising a grid the size of India's is a capital problem as much as a technology one, and NTPC — as the incumbent that still supplies a large share of the country's electricity — is positioning itself to lead rather than be displaced by the transition.
Batteries and green hydrogen
The most deep-tech-relevant elements of the plan sit in storage and hydrogen. NTPC has flagged plans for roughly 38.9 GWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) — grid-scale batteries that store surplus solar and wind for release when the sun sets or the wind drops. Storage is the linchpin of any high-renewables grid; without it, intermittent generation cannot reliably replace always-on thermal plants.
The company is also pursuing green hydrogen, produced by splitting water with renewable electricity, as a route to decarbonise industry and heavy transport, and has signalled interest in coal gasification as a bridge technology. Together these lines of work place NTPC in the middle of several of India's frontier energy bets at once — electrolysers, large-format batteries and cleaner uses of its legacy coal fleet.
Nuclear ambitions
Perhaps the most striking element is nuclear. NTPC has outlined a 30 GW nuclear programme targeted at FY47, aligning with India's broader push to expand atomic power as a firm, low-carbon complement to variable renewables. For a company historically synonymous with coal, a multi-decade nuclear ambition marks a substantial widening of its technology base — and dovetails with recent moves by Indian industry into small and captive reactors.
Balancing coal and clean
NTPC's plan is notable precisely because it does not pretend coal will vanish overnight. The utility continues to add thermal capacity to meet near-term demand growth in a fast-industrialising economy, even as it pours capital into renewables, storage and nuclear. That dual-track approach — keeping the lights on today while building the clean grid of tomorrow — is the defining tension of India's energy transition, and NTPC's roadmap is essentially a bet on managing both at once.
Why it matters
Grand capacity targets are common in the power sector, and execution over a decade-plus horizon is never guaranteed. But NTPC's sheer weight makes its choices consequential: as the anchor generator, the technologies it standardises on — which battery chemistries, which electrolysers, which reactor designs — will shape the supply chains and cost curves for the rest of the market. A storage-and-hydrogen-heavy roadmap from the country's biggest utility is, in that sense, a strong demand signal to India's clean-energy hardware makers.
The figures will be tested against delivery in the years ahead. For now, the direction of travel is unambiguous: even India's coal champion is planning its future around batteries, hydrogen and the atom.
