Nilekani-Anchored F2A Closes ₹3,000 Crore for Growth-Stage AI and Deep-Tech Bets, Lifts Hard Cap to ₹3,500 Crore
Fundamentum Frontier Advisors, anchored by Nandan Nilekani, has closed ₹3,000 crore for a growth-stage AI and deep-tech fund and raised its hard cap to ₹3,500 crore. It plans 12–15 investments of ₹100–200 crore each — the Series B/C gap Indian deep-tech founders often struggle to fill.

One of the most persistent complaints from Indian deep-tech founders is that money dries up after the early rounds. Seed and Series A cheques have become easier to find, but companies building chips, robots or defence hardware need much larger sums to reach production — and those cheques have often had to come from abroad.
Fundamentum Frontier Advisors (F2A) is pitching itself as one answer. The investment platform, which counts Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani as anchor investor and mentor, said on October 13, 2026 that it has secured aggregate subscriptions of ₹3,000 crore for a growth-stage fund focused on artificial intelligence and deep technology, and has raised the fund's hard cap to ₹3,500 crore.
The fund at a glance
- Corpus so far: ₹3,000 crore in closed subscriptions; final close to follow once the remaining ₹500 crore is allocated. "We have already closed subscriptions of Rs 3,000 crore," partner Ashish Kumar said.
- Investors: Indian and overseas investors in a roughly 70:30 ratio, through two regulated vehicles.
- Strategy: 12–15 investments over the next two to three years, with cheques of about ₹100–200 crore each.
- Focus areas: AI, semiconductor-related technologies, deep-tech infrastructure, advanced materials, defence technology, robotics and enterprise software.
- Team: partners Ashish Kumar, Debraj Banerjee and Vivek Singla.
One report put Nilekani's personal commitment at about ₹200 crore; that figure appeared in only a single outlet and has not been independently confirmed.
F2A should not be confused with Fundamentum Partnership, the separate early-stage venture firm co-founded by Nilekani, which raised a $227-million second fund in 2022.
Why the cheque size matters
The ₹100–200 crore range is the heart of the story. That is roughly $12–24 million per deal — the size of a typical Series B or Series C round — and it is precisely the stage at which many Indian deep-tech companies have struggled to raise money from domestic investors.
A software start-up can often reach profitability with modest capital. A company building a satellite constellation, a semiconductor product or an autonomous defence system typically needs to fund manufacturing lines, certification and long customer-qualification cycles before revenue scales. Without enough domestic growth capital, such companies either raise from foreign funds — sometimes with conditions around where IP and headquarters sit — or stall.
How it fits the bigger picture
F2A's raise lands amid a wider build-up of capital aimed at Indian deep tech. The government's ₹1 lakh crore Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) scheme is intended to channel long-term, low-cost money into private R&D, and several new venture funds focused on frontier technology have announced closes in recent months. A 70% domestic investor base also signals growing appetite among Indian family offices and institutions to back technology companies at later stages, rather than leaving that role to overseas capital.
With only 12–15 slots, F2A will be selective. Its portfolio choices — and how many of them are hardware-heavy deep-tech companies rather than AI software firms — will show how far Indian growth capital is willing to go into the riskiest, most capital-intensive parts of the technology stack.
