ISRO Chief Sets a 300-Satellite Target and a 2035 Space Station Deadline

A quantified space-economy target
ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan has set out one of the most concrete numerical targets yet for India's space programme, saying the country plans to launch at least 300 satellites over the next five to six years. Speaking on 9 August 2026, Narayanan said the goal came as a direct task from the Prime Minister — a mandate to put 300 satellites into orbit within that window — and framed it as central to India's ambitions in national security, communications and Earth observation.
The figure is striking against India's launch history. For much of its existence, ISRO measured its satellite fleet in the dozens; a target of 300 in roughly half a decade implies a step-change in cadence, in manufacturing throughput and — crucially — in how much of the work is done outside ISRO itself.
Building the constellations
Reaching 300 satellites is less a single mission than an industrial programme. It requires satellites to be produced on something closer to a production line than a workshop, launch vehicles available on a regular schedule, and a supply chain of components and subsystems deep enough to feed both. That is precisely why India has spent the past few years opening the sector to private industry through IN-SPACe and the 2023 space policy, licensing private firms to build satellites, operate ground stations and, increasingly, fly their own rockets.
The applications driving the number are as much strategic as commercial. Large satellite constellations underpin secure communications, real-time Earth observation and situational awareness — capabilities a country of India's size and security posture increasingly wants to own rather than lease. Navigation, disaster monitoring and border surveillance all scale with the size of the on-orbit fleet.
A space station by 2035
Narayanan reiterated that India intends to have its own space station — the Bharatiya Antariksh Station — operational by 2035, with the programme advancing through design reviews of its first module. A crewed orbital outpost is among the most demanding engineering challenges any space agency can take on, requiring mastery of life support, in-orbit docking, long-duration operations and reliable human-rated launch. The 2035 date places India among the small group of nations pursuing an independent station as the International Space Station era winds down.
Gaganyaan as the near-term milestone
The nearest and most visible test of that trajectory is Gaganyaan, India's first human spaceflight programme. Narayanan said the uncrewed mission — which will carry systems and, in later trials, the humanoid Vyomamitra to low Earth orbit — is targeted before the end of 2026. Success would validate the crew module, escape system, parachutes and recovery hardware that India has been qualifying through a long sequence of ground and airdrop tests, and would clear the path toward a crewed flight and, eventually, the space station.
The industrial backdrop
The 300-satellite target does not sit in isolation. India now hosts hundreds of space startups working on satellite manufacture and launch services, private firms are lining up their first commercial orbital launches, and IN-SPACe has issued scores of authorisations to non-government entities. The chairman's remarks effectively hand that ecosystem a demand signal: a national fleet target large enough that ISRO cannot — and does not intend to — build it alone.
