Farm Watt Raises 32.5 Crore to Turn Crop Waste Into India's Biogas Feedstock
Bioenergy supply-chain startup Farm Watt Innovations has raised 32.5 crore rupees co-led by IAN Alpha Fund and Rainmatter to expand its biomass aggregation network — turning crop residue that is often burned into feedstock for India's compressed biogas plants.

Farm Watt Innovations, a young company trying to fix one of the least glamorous but most stubborn problems in India's clean-energy transition, has raised 32.5 crore rupees (about 3.36 million dollars) in a funding round co-led by IAN Alpha Fund and Rainmatter. The capital will go toward building out the physical backbone that renewable-gas plants depend on: a reliable supply chain for agricultural biomass.
The problem it is chasing
Compressed biogas (CBG) plants convert organic waste — crop residue, animal dung, food and market waste — into a clean-burning fuel that can substitute for imported natural gas. The technology works, and India has backed it heavily through schemes that encourage new plants. But CBG plants live or die by feedstock: they need a steady, affordable and predictable stream of biomass, and aggregating that biomass from millions of small, scattered farms is genuinely hard. Crop residue is seasonal, bulky, and expensive to collect and transport, which is why so much of it is simply burned in the field each year — a practice that fouls the air across northern India every winter.
Farm Watt, founded in 2023 by Kumar Neelendu, positions itself as the middle layer that solves this. The company aggregates agricultural biomass and supplies it to CBG plants and other bioenergy facilities, effectively acting as a supply-chain operator for renewable-gas producers rather than owning the gas plants themselves.
What the money will build
The fresh capital is earmarked for strengthening that supply chain: expanding the company's biomass collection network, building additional aggregation hubs, investing in machinery for handling and processing residue, and growing its workforce. Farm Watt currently runs 15 biomass aggregation hubs across six states, and plans to widen its footprint into a long list of agricultural heartland states including Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Bihar.
The geography is telling. Many of those states — Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh in particular — are exactly where stubble burning is most acute. By giving farmers a buyer for crop residue that would otherwise be set alight, an aggregation network like Farm Watt's addresses an air-pollution problem and an energy-supply problem at the same time.
Why it matters
Much of the attention in India's energy-transition story goes to the headline technologies — solar farms, green hydrogen, grid-scale batteries. But bioenergy occupies a distinctive niche: it turns a waste stream that is currently an environmental liability into a domestic, dispatchable fuel, while putting money back into rural economies. The bottleneck has rarely been the gas plants themselves; it has been the unglamorous logistics of getting biomass to them at the right price and volume.
That is the gap investors appear to be betting Farm Watt can fill. The participation of Rainmatter, the climate-focused investment arm associated with Zerodha, alongside the IAN Alpha Fund, signals growing appetite for the infrastructure and supply-chain layer of the bioenergy business rather than only the plants that grab headlines.
The road ahead
Scaling a biomass aggregation network is an operational grind — it means signing up farmers, running collection logistics across seasons, and maintaining quality and price discipline as volumes grow. Whether Farm Watt can extend its 15-hub model across a dozen more states without losing that discipline will determine how much of India's crop residue it can divert from the field to the digester. If it succeeds, it will have built something India's renewable-gas ambitions badly need: a dependable pipeline of feedstock.
