BEL Turns to IIT-Kanpur Startup EndureAir for 12 High-Altitude Kamikaze Drones

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), the state-owned backbone of India's defence-electronics industry, is turning to a young company out of IIT Kanpur for one of the sharper edges of the country's drone arsenal. In August 2026, BEL and EndureAir Systems reached an agreement for the supply of twelve High Altitude High Payload Delivery kamikaze drones — loitering munitions built to operate where the air is thin and the targets are hard.

The agreement

Under the arrangement, EndureAir will deliver twelve of the high-altitude strike drones to BEL, which acts as a system integrator channelling technology from private developers to the armed forces. The number is small, but for a loitering-munition programme the first tranche is less about volume than validation: it puts an indigenous, high-altitude kamikaze platform into the hands of a major public-sector integrator and, through it, toward operational users.

A loitering munition built for the mountains

Loitering munitions — often called kamikaze drones — occupy a middle ground between a missile and a reconnaissance UAV. They can be launched toward an area, loiter overhead while an operator or onboard system searches for a target, and then dive into it, destroying themselves on impact. Their appeal is precision and patience: they can wait for the right moment and strike hardened or fleeting targets that a conventional aircraft or artillery round might miss.

What distinguishes EndureAir's system is its emphasis on altitude and payload. The drones are designed to operate at high altitudes while carrying heavier warheads, and to deliver precision strikes against hardened targets — a profile clearly shaped by the demands of India's mountainous northern frontiers, where thin air degrades the lift and endurance of ordinary drones and where fortified positions are common. According to reporting on the system, the platform is intended for deep-strike roles including anti-radar suppression, anti-vehicle attacks, logistics interdiction and general battlefield disruption, with guidance expected to combine GPS/INS navigation and electro-optical and infrared terminal seekers so it can find and hit targets even when satellite signals are contested.

From an IIT-Kanpur lab to the battlefield

EndureAir Systems began as an incubation project at IIT Kanpur in 2018 before spinning out into a full-fledged company, and it has built its reputation on aerial robotics — including unconventional configurations aimed at endurance and payload rather than speed. The BEL agreement is the latest step in a steady march from campus lab to defence supplier, and it slots into a broader pattern in which Indian startups incubated at the country's engineering institutes are increasingly feeding indigenous hardware into the military.

That pipeline matters because loitering munitions have become one of the clearest lessons of recent conflicts, where cheap, precise, expendable strike drones have repeatedly punched above their cost. India has been moving to build its own rather than depend on imports, and a home-grown, high-altitude variant addresses a niche — mountain warfare — that off-the-shelf foreign systems rarely optimise for.

BEL as integrator, startups as innovators

The structure of the deal is as telling as the hardware. BEL brings scale, defence-grade manufacturing discipline, quality systems and an established relationship with the armed forces; EndureAir brings the design and the willingness to iterate quickly that large public-sector units are not built for. Pairing the two — a PSU integrator wrapping a startup's technology — has become a favoured model for India's Aatmanirbhar Bharat push in defence, letting the country tap agile private innovation without asking small firms to shoulder the entire burden of production and certification.

For EndureAir, an order routed through BEL is a credibility milestone that can open doors to far larger procurements. For BEL, it is a way to keep pace with a fast-moving category by sourcing rather than building from scratch. And for the Indian military, it is another indigenous option in a class of weapon that has rewritten expectations of what small, disposable systems can achieve.

The programme is early, and twelve drones will not by themselves change a battlefield. But the agreement captures where India's defence-technology ecosystem is heading: strike capability designed for the country's own hardest terrain, built by a startup out of an academic lab, and carried to the forces by the established giants of the public sector.
