DRDO Aces Maiden Flight Test of Project Kusha, India's Extended-Range Air Defence Shield

India took a decisive step towards a homegrown, S-400-class air defence umbrella on 23 July 2026, when the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) carried out the maiden flight test of the Kusha long-range surface-to-air missile (LRSAM) from the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha. The missile was fired against an electronic target that simulated a high-speed, high-altitude aerial threat, which the system successfully intercepted, according to defence officials.
A first flight that proves the concept
The debut test validated the integrated performance of the missile, its onboard seeker and the ground systems that guide it. Officials described the trial as a clean success, with the interceptor tracking and neutralising a fast, high-flying electronic target. It is the first flight in a development campaign that will eventually put three different interceptor variants through their paces before the system is cleared for service.
Project Kusha is the umbrella programme under which DRDO is building an indigenous Extended Range Air Defence System (ERADS) for both the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy. The goal is a layered, mobile shield capable of engaging fighter aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles, drones and large support aircraft such as airborne early-warning platforms and aerial tankers.
Three variants, one layered shield
What distinguishes Kusha from India's existing air defences is its multi-tier reach. The system is designed around three interceptor variants with strike ranges of roughly 150 km, 250 km and 350-400 km. That spread lets a single network engage threats across a wide band of distance and altitude, thinning out an incoming raid at long range before shorter-range interceptors mop up whatever leaks through.
This graduated approach is what has led many analysts to frame Kusha as India's indigenous answer to Russia's S-400 Triumf, five squadrons of which the Indian Air Force has been inducting. Rather than replace imported systems, Kusha is meant to supplement them, giving India a domestically controlled backbone that it can produce, upgrade and export on its own terms.
Where it fits in India's air defence
Once operational, Kusha will slot in alongside the medium-range Akash and Akash-NG systems, the naval and land Barak-8 (MRSAM), and the long-range S-400. Together these are intended to form a continuous engagement envelope from short to very long range. The long-range Kusha variants, in particular, are expected to push India's interception line far enough out to threaten high-value enemy aircraft before they can launch stand-off weapons.
For the Navy, an extended-range surface-to-air capability that is designed and built at home is strategically significant: it reduces dependence on foreign supply chains for a class of weapon central to fleet air defence.
The road to induction
The maiden test is the opening move in a multi-year evaluation. DRDO will need to demonstrate each of the three interceptor variants, prove the seeker and radar chain against increasingly demanding targets, and validate the system in user trials before the armed forces sign off. Current expectations place the phased induction of the Kusha variants with the services between 2028 and 2030.
If the timeline holds, Kusha would arrive as India works to widen the share of critical defence hardware that is designed and manufactured domestically, a priority underscored across recent air-defence, propulsion and missile programmes.
Why it matters
A credible, sovereign long-range air defence system is one of the harder capabilities for any nation to master, blending high-performance propulsion, seeker technology, fast data links and command-and-control software. A successful maiden flight does not by itself deliver an operational shield, but it is the milestone that turns a paper programme into a flight-proven one.
For India, the significance is twofold. Strategically, Kusha promises a home-grown deterrent against the aircraft and precision-strike weapons that dominate modern conflict. Industrially, it deepens the domestic base in guidance, radar and missile integration that also feeds civilian and export markets. The 23 July flight is an early but important marker that the programme is on track.
