Cisco and IIT Delhi Open a Joint Hub for AI and Cybersecurity

Networking giant Cisco and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi have launched a joint Cisco Technology Hub, a three-year collaboration aimed at advancing research, skilling and ecosystem-building in artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. The two partners announced the centre on 4 August 2026.

A campus-industry bet on two frontier fields

The hub is structured as a three-year partnership that pairs Cisco's engineering and product expertise with IIT Delhi's research base. Its remit spans two of the most consequential areas in India's digital build-out: applied AI and cybersecurity. Beyond pure research, the centre is designed to drive knowledge exchange between academia and industry and to help develop what the partners describe as a "highly skilled digital workforce."

According to IIT Delhi, the collaboration will also work with government stakeholders to strengthen India's digital and security frameworks — positioning the hub not just as a lab but as a bridge between campus research and national policy on secure, trustworthy technology.

Why AI and security, together

The pairing of AI and cybersecurity is deliberate. As AI systems move from pilots into production across banking, telecom, healthcare and government, they widen the attack surface they are meant to defend — model theft, data poisoning, prompt manipulation and AI-accelerated intrusion are moving from research papers into real threat models. Housing both disciplines under one roof lets researchers study how AI can harden defences and how those same systems must themselves be secured.

For Cisco, which has been expanding its security and AI-infrastructure portfolio, an anchored presence inside one of India's top engineering schools offers early access to talent and to problems framed by Indian conditions — scale, linguistic diversity and cost sensitivity. For IIT Delhi, the tie-up channels industry resources and real-world deployment questions into its labs.

Skilling as the quiet headline

Perhaps the most durable output of a centre like this is people. India's ambition to be a hub for both AI development and cyber-defence runs into the same constraint everywhere: a shortage of engineers who can work fluently across machine learning, systems and security. By embedding training and workforce development into the hub's mandate — rather than treating it as an afterthought to research — Cisco and IIT Delhi are targeting that gap directly.

Part of a wider pattern

The hub is the latest in a run of deep-tech tie-ups between global technology firms and Indian institutes, as companies seek to localise R&D and governments push for indigenous capability in strategic technologies. The specifics of funding and headcount were not disclosed, but the model — a multi-year, co-branded campus centre with a research-plus-skilling mandate — has become a favoured template for turning marquee partnerships into lasting capacity.

If it delivers, the payoff will be measured less in press releases than in the papers, patents and, above all, the engineers that emerge over the next three years.
