The unglamorous middle of the battery story

India talks a great deal about gigafactories and cell chemistry, and much less about the layer in between: the engineered battery pack, the charger and the management electronics that turn raw cells into something a drone, a robot or an autonomous vehicle can trust with its life. Adiabatic Technologies, a Pune-and-Ahilyanagar-based deep-tech startup, works in that unglamorous middle — and it has just raised ₹8.3 crore (about $1 million) in a seed round to scale it.

The round was co-led by Malpani Ventures and Avinya Ventures, with participation from Appreciate Capital, DeVC, San Francisco-based Operators Studio and the UPES Incubator. Founded in 2022 by IIT Hyderabad alumnus Darshan Meher, the company will use the money to lift its annual manufacturing capacity to 100 MWh, expand its engineering and R&D teams, and accelerate deployment of its battery platforms across a spread of demanding industries.

Not a cell maker — a systems maker

The distinction matters. Adiabatic is not trying to out-manufacture the cell giants. It designs custom lithium-ion battery packs, smart chargers and — the part that carries the real intellectual property — its own Battery Management Systems (BMS), the electronics and firmware that keep a pack safe, balanced and predictable under stress.

Its target customers are original-equipment manufacturers in what the company calls high-reliability industries: robotics, defence, drones, electric mobility, marine, agricultural equipment, industrial automation and stationary energy storage. These are applications where an off-the-shelf pack is not good enough. A surveillance drone that must fly in the cold, a defence system that cannot afford a thermal event, an industrial robot that runs three shifts a day — each has a specific envelope of temperature, discharge rate, cycle life and safety margin that a commodity battery will not meet. Adiabatic's argument is that engineering to those envelopes, rather than selling one pack for all, is a business worth building.

Why the timing works

The demand pull behind this seed round is real and visibly Indian. The country's drone ecosystem is expanding under a wave of defence procurement and civil-aviation policy support; its robotics startups are moving from pilots to deployments; its electric-mobility market keeps widening beyond two-wheelers into specialised industrial and agricultural machines. Every one of those systems needs a battery it can depend on, and increasingly those buyers want a domestic supplier rather than an imported pack of uncertain provenance — both for supply-chain security and, in defence and drones, for sovereignty reasons.

That is the gap Adiabatic is aiming at: not the cell, which India is still learning to make at scale, but the reliable, application-specific pack and the intelligence that governs it. A 100 MWh annual capacity is modest against the country's gigafactory ambitions, yet it is well matched to a business of high-value, engineered packs sold to OEMs rather than commodity cells sold by the tonne.

The road from seed to scale

A ₹8.3 crore seed is early money, and the company's stated uses — capacity, team, deployment — are the right ones for this stage. The harder tests come next. Building custom BMS and packs for defence and drone customers means clearing rigorous qualification cycles, and winning those accounts tends to be slow and reference-driven. Scaling manufacturing while keeping the per-pack engineering that is Adiabatic's whole selling point is its own tension.

But the strategy is coherent, and it targets a genuine hole in India's energy-hardware stack. As the country's autonomous machines multiply, someone has to build the batteries that keep them flying, driving and working — safely, in Indian conditions, without a passport. Adiabatic is betting the market will pay a premium for exactly that.
